BUILDING A BETTER BRYAN
ABOUT JAMES
Hello friends,
My family's roots in Brazos County run deep. My great-grandfather settled here in 1866, in what is now known as Edge in northern Brazos County. Both my grandfather and father were born in Bryan, and I've had the privilege of calling this wonderful city home for almost my entire life. I'm a proud graduate of Bryan High School, located right in the heart of Single-Member District 4 (SMD4).
For over 30 years, my wife, Linda Gutierrez, and I have been blessed to raise our three sons in this great community. In that time, l've built a career as a small business owner and real estate broker, and I also had the honor of serving for a decade as a staffer for U.S. Representative Bill Flores, where I concluded my tenure as District Director. Our family is also proud to be members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church here in Bryan.
For the past 48 years, I've had the privilege of calling Bryan my home. Since May of 2022, I've had the honor of serving on the Bryan City Council, and in November of 2022, I was selected to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem. In my time on the council, I've contributed to numerous boards, including Bryan Commerce and Development (BCD), the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency (BVSWMA), the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial (BVVM), the Brazos County Health District (BCHD), and the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization (BCSMPO).
Like President George H.W. Bush, I view public service as a noble calling, and serving the citizens of Bryan has been the greatest privilege of my life. It would be a tremendous honor to continue serving the community I love.
Just over two years ago, I had the privilege of being sworn-in to the Bryan City Council to complete the unexpired term of my friend Flynn Adcock who had tragically passed.
It has been incredibly rewarding, serving as Councilmember for SMD 4. Additionally, it was an honor to have been selected by my colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem. I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement I have received throughout this time.
When I first ran for City Council, I made a commitment to work to foster growth, support our essential services, vigorously maintain infrastructure, and enhance our quality of life.
I am proud to report that, alongside the mayor and fellow council members, we have made significant strides in fulfilling these promises by:
-
Approving key economic development projects and incentives in Historic Downtown Bryan, North of Northgate, and at the RELLIS Campus, all while reducing the tax rate on Bryan's property owners.
-
Allocating additional resources to bolster our Police and Fire departments.
-
Greenlighting various road, sidewalk, and drainage improvements across SMD 4 and the wider city.
-
Enhancing Midtown Park with attractions like the Movie Bowl Grille, the Tennis Multi-Purpose Facility, and the Big Barn Dance. Moreover, Historic Downtown Bryan continues to thrive with new opportunities for dining, shopping, and entertainment, including the new Maroon and White Night.
I have also prioritized safeguarding our neighborhoods within SMD 4 and throughout the city while also promoting growth and development.
I hope my actions have demonstrated my commitment to fulfilling promises and advancing Bryan's interests, and I humbly ask for your support and endorsement.
